The Centre for Social Research is one of the world's leading organisations for research, teaching and communications on international development. Its purpose is to understand and explain the world, and to try to change it – to influence as well as to inform.

Poverty and sustainable livelihoods – focussing on in-depth exploration of the scale, characteristics, causes and dynamics of poverty. The centre also plays important roles in policy dialogue with regard to poverty analysis issues in Malawi. HIV/AIDS, gender and food security issues are core to the analysis of poverty dynamics and transitions in and out of poverty.

Environmental management and access to natural resources – focussing on the understanding of the causal relationships between the various dimensions of environmental issues, poverty and development, and the socio-economic impact of alternative policy options and regimes for management of natural resources and the environment.
